Slowly
Thumbing through
Glossy
Straight edged pages (no “dog ears” please)
Filled with
High Fashion
Pop Culture
Short Stories
Etiquette in regards to ‘this’ and ‘that’
The latest trends
Various fragrance samples (yes, I really do rub them against my wrist and sniff)
What’s ‘next’ of the ‘next’
And
Gourmet recipes (Which I read, but never make)
Is
My
Pleasure.
Considering my almost orgasmic passion for fashion and print; I am surprised that somehow I have’nt defied the laws of nature and physically given birth to a magazine of my own. Immaculate conception.
I attribute part of my addiction to my Grandmother who is an avid reader and has always encouraged me to read and consume all things text related and within my range of vision. Grandma is an enabler. She is known for giving books and magazine subscriptions as special occasion and holiday gifts. If you mean anything to her it is guaranteed that you will receive the gift of print. I love her for that.
Granny was ‘cool’ about it too. It was her who paid for my first subscription to Vibe magazine (I still own several of the first edition copies that are sized larger than life). Glamour, Cosmo, Better Homes and Gardens, Martha Stewart Living, Essence and even REDBOOK all came from ‘Grams’. However, I suspect part of the reason for so many books and magazines is because Grandma kept signing up with various “Book of the Month” clubs in hopes of a chance at winning their never ending sweepstakes. *wink*
Growing up, my family didn’t have a lot of money. I never was the first to have the hot new trends. For every five pair of designer jeans someone else had, I was lucky to own one. There were many times when I wore “high-water” pants to school and my peers would poke-fun, asking me if I was “waiting for a flood” (but that had to cease when I entered Junior High – fuck that). I never got that Barbie Doll townhouse with the pull-string elevator, either. (If you really want to woo me, keep your roses – try sending a broad the Barbie Townhome and see what happens).
Fashion magazines and ladies home journals were my escape ticket from reality. I’d spend hours reading articles, admiring fashion spreads and trying to pronounce the designers fancy French and Italian names. I spent an equal amount of time sneaking my mothers tube of hot-pink, Fashion Fair lipstick and making pouty-faces in the mirror.
I envisioned myself draped in silk and furs.
I fantasized it was me strutting down the catwalk in designer heels.
It was me lying out by the pool in Italian swimwear and sunglasses.
It was me walking those Dalmatians down the block in couture rain gear. *ha*
It is safe to say that in some ways, my love affair with magazines has shaped the mind and style of Angelique. Considering the fluff content of some of the womens’ magazines, I am not sure if that is a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ thing. It all sounds so silly now. I feel kind lame admitting all of this, as I would like for you to believe I was born too cool for school and never a low income, day dreamer. Whatever the case, it is what it is and like the almighty spinach eatin’, Popeye says “ I ‘yam what I ‘yam ”. I wouldn’t change a thing and I’mma embrace my magazine addiction until the casket drops.
Here are some of my current favorites. What are yours?
BUST (For women who have something to get off of their chest)
COSMOPOLITAN (Trashy yet sassy)
Essence (The modern day classic)
FADER (Urban Hotness)
In Style (The name speaks for itself)
KING (Their airbrushing skills never cease to amaze me)
LUCKY (Great for shopping via your imagination)
Sister 2 Sister (My guilty gossip pleasure)
UPTOWN (Trent put me on)
Martha Stewart Living (Don’t sleep on Martha)
“O” (Inspirational)
A Prime Candidate for “Fav” Status
JOLIE As of July 1, 2005, Vivica A. Fox joined the Jolie magazine staff as Editor-At Large. Ms. Fox will be expressing her thoughts and ideas in a recurring column and will be conducting celebrity-on-celebrity interviews with the cover subject of each issue. You gotta love it. Check HERE for Vivicas thoughts on friendship.

WORLD BRIDE. I don’t foresee marriage in my near future, but it’s still fun to think about it.
Magazines I Miss. . .
HONEY (defunct) | SUEDE (defunct) | BLAZE (defunct)
Magazines I Useta Love . . .
Side note: I’m looking for a dope music magazine to add to my favorites. Know of any?
And I could go on forever with this, but I’m sure you get the point.
HOLLA!

I LOVE to read and ever since high school I have been obsessed with magazines. At one point I probably bought a dozen mags a month easy, but due to my dire finances I only buy Marie Claire now. It seems to cover a little bit of everything and I never feel jilted after reading it.

@ Tina
Ah yes, Marie Claire . . . that’s a good one. As a matter of fact,at one time I had a 3 year subscription at one time. How could I forget? LOL!

I didn’t see Black Tail magazine on your list — what up with that? LOL! — Oh man, I just crack myself up!
As far as music magazines, I like Scratch magazine. I don’t have a subscription, I pick it up whenever they have a decent artist/producer on the cover.
It’s a hit or a miss with that magazine sometimes. But for the music producer/beat junkie, it’s a must-cop publication.
Cool post, ‘Lique. Your magazine game is t-t-tight!

My name is Summer, and I too am a magazine junky. “HI SUMMER”
I currently subscribe to Lucky, Essence, Marth Stewart Food, and Reader’s Digest (how lame is that?).
I used to get National Geographic — I HEART NG, I really do — and need to renew.
I can go in Barnes & Noble and flip through mags and the next thing you know 3 hours have passed.
TRACE is another nice one, although in my opinion, they only have one really good article usually that interest me, not enough for the hefty cover price.
Oh yeah, I get Jet, too. Only because I went to the Ebony Fashion Show and it’s free with the ticket. Well, Jet or Ebony. But I got Ebony last year, and it ended up being a big waste of space. Jet is a much smaller waste of space.

LOL@ Summer . . .
How about I had a free subscription to Ebony too, because I went to their Fashion Fair last spring. Classic magazine indeed, but they need to step their game up a tad. . . in BOTH categories.
Oh and my son LOVES National Geographic. We had a subscription to that too.(Thanks Grandma) It has since expired. . .
How about I’m laughing because I forgot about having subscribed to some of the mags that being mentioned. LOL!
Readers Digest. . . that’s some grandma stuff right thurr. *wink*

OMG! My mother put me onto magazines when I was very young. I remember as a little girl glancing pages of Essesnce. Today, I read it faithfully. I too “useta” read VIBE & The Source. Both fell off hard. I also agree Ebony is lacking some- I may read it while in a store unless a noteworthy celeb graces the front cover. I’m huge on Black Enterprise (great financial tips). Other magazines I love include O, Lucky, & Cosmo.
