Angelique: The Love/Hater of the Holidays. . .

Dear World,

I’m really not feeling the holiday “spirit”. Not because I’m grumpy, but mostly because I think Christmas [or what many of us perceive Christmas to be] is FAKE. I refuse to give gifts based on social guilt and guerilla marketing tactics sponsored by corporate America. I am only buying gifts for my son this year. Everyone else can “kick rocks and agitate the gravel” [Providing it isn’t frozen over]. Nor am I expecting anything. Why would I? It’s not my birthday – It’s Jesus’s birthday? Yes? Well, I am not religious either . . . so Christmas is cancelled from that angle too. I didn’t even bother to put up the tree this year. Sorry.

But I must admit I do hold on to the glow of Holidays past when I was an innocent child [un-aware of corporate America and fake ass Santas]. The memories of yesteryear are what keep me feeling any sort of warm fuzzies for Christmas. I enjoy elaborate family dinners. I love the tiny-tots with their eyes all a glow when they receive a gift they really adore. I love a Charlie Brown Christmas. I love, lovel , love, egg-nog and Brandy. I dig cocoa and carriage rides as much as the next chic. And I even enjoy listening to holiday music [BTW – Check for the “Holiday Soul” RADIO BLOG later tonite] .

But all of that fake, cheery, shop–til-you-drop business is not for the Dame.

So I guess that makes me a love/hater of Christmas, right? Depending on my dispostion at the time, I love or loathe the season. What about you? Do you just loooooove you some Christmas time? Or could you do without it? What do you enjoy most about the Holidays? What do you not enjoy so much? Any family traditions? What has been your favorite Christmas so far?

Talk to me . . .and KEEP IT REAL.

  2. I feel you on this a lot! I love the lights that go up ever year and the smell of a fresh tree in a house but presents aren’t for me. You get to a certain point in your life where you are too grown for them or the fact that you’re just broke and now have a million people that are giving you presents and you feel you have to give something back…it shouldn’t be like that. Anyway I like this and I feel you on this 100%!

    To the Love/Haters of Christmas!

    Fuck the selfish.

  3. you know what…i feel a little blase blah about christmas this year. we’re doing “secret santa” in my house so we each have to buy a gift for one person and i don’t think i could stand it if i had to do anymore. real talk, since my great grandmother passed last may, my entire outlook on EVERYTHANG has flipped. where i used to be extremely tolerant of things, i gives no extra! i’ve decided that holding back my “true” self, and the dreams i have no longer will do you feel me? plus, my grandmere was, is , and always will be my best friend….she’s my peace of mind and since i can no longer physically receive that from her, i have to find it in myself i realize. anywho, my birth anniversary is december 27th. i’m more focused on that than anything else, and truly excited for the first time because i’m holding me down the way i should. my motto from now on is “i got me”, for me, i come first . oh yeah, when it comes to christmas, all i need is eartha kitt singing “santa baby” nat king cole singin “the christmas song” and all day viewings of “a christmas story”….i’m too picky when it comes to gifts anyway ( i’ve been known to throw away things i don’t like. trust.) its only better to receive if you get me anything i please i say! TTFN p.s. long comment i know…and i realize i said i was 22 in the last one, that was me being overzealous. on the 27th i’ll be 22. i’m not a lie like our dear “old” friend ms. knowles haha

  5. I don’t mind Christmas. It’s the hustle and bustle of trying to find gifts for the family that is the most pain for me. I go out and buy gift cards for my family, but that feels awkward.

When I hand out gift cards, I’m wondering if my family members think I’m lazy because I didn’t go out and actually buy them gifts.

I know this Christmas I’m not going to get shit. I alienated my whole fam this year. Not on purpose, I have been extremely busy.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I opened up a gift on Xmas and there’s dog dookie in it. LOL!

    Oh well, Merry Christmas Saucy!

  6. I dig you SD. I’m always mixed and conflicted during the Holy-days season. I LOVE Christmas music, pretty lights, and yummy baked goods! I’m MIXED about annual gatherings where I’m either happy to see loved ones that I wish I could see more often or very uncomfortable to find myself stuck yet again in an awkward and dry conversation with a distant cousin or friend of a friend who I see once a year and can never find anything to talk about. I HATE the consumerism, media oversaturation, and expectations for gift giving!

My family (me, kids & husband) doesn’t officially ‘celebrate’ Christmas. No tree, no wreath, no presents from Santa. On Christmas day at my house, we watch rented movies, eat and lounge around all day. If we’re feeling energetic we’ll go catch a film. (On Monday we’re going to see DreamGirls. Can’t wait!) Mostly we stay in our pajamas, do what we want, talk to family on the phone. We’ve found our own traditions and rhythm.

Seasons Greetings Lique. Here’s to making power moves in 2007!
