I say Vanity has an edge and then some. Sure, Apollonia (Patricia Kotero) made an appearance in Purple Rain and had an upgraded video on MTV (or something like that). And the group sold more albums with Apollonia than they did when Vanity was in the mix (although I am certain their boost in sales is attributed to the success of Princes’ movie). However, Vanity (Denise Matthews) had the better voice and most definitely exuded more sex appeal. Extra credit should be given based on the strength of her being the original ‘6′. Ya know?

Anything after that is merely an imitation. It may be a decent imitation, but it’s still an imitation . . .

I aint hatin’! Both of the ladies (and the two eye candies that played the background) were doing the damn thing! I aint mad at any of them. Nope. *shakes head*

I enjoyed watching these videos. Good times my people, good times!

  2. Man! I am not sure!! I am torn between the 2, for real!! This was a good one here!! Since I have to choose, I will say by far Apollonia. This footage brought back memories, lol. I may have to practice some moves for my boo!!

  7. Wow! This is a hard call for me.

    I loved Vanity. When I was young and sprung, I wanted to be Vanity’s “Nasty Boy.”

    But then again, I couldn’t resist Appollonia’s “faux” sex appeal. Listen to the extended version — I think its 26 minutes long — of “Erotic City” and see if you don’t get a rise.

    So, after much consideration, I’m going to go with Vanity. She was dripping with sexiness, plus, she has some great nipples (as seen in her big-screen acting debut Action Jackson with Carl Weathers).

    Actually, the vocals for Erotic City were performed by Sheila E. Now, Sheila E was shiznit too! She STILL is . . .

    As a matter of fact, she performed at Princes show on 7/7/7. She was looking fierce in a purple dress. She gets down w/ the get down on them drums:) Yes sir!

    p.s. Yeah, the Erotic City extended mix was a looooong. . . ass. . . mix. They don’t make long songs like they use to (except for Caspers “Cha,Cha,Slide” *lol*). Shit cost money! Listeners get bored quickly.

  14. Anyone have any comments about “Vanity” being a minister now? She has spoken out about her past, and I applaud her for her honesty, but DAMN she’s da bomb! Appolonia is a…well let’s just say she isn’t in Prince’s league. Shelia E. is still in the fold and is as awsome as ever! Wendy and Lisa are on his new disc too….is the Revolution about to be televised?!?

  16. Vanity 6 was not only the original, but the deal-breaker. Apollonia did not have the acting, vocal, or look chops to compare to Vanity. She was a replacement for Purple Rain, when Vanity had the guts to ask for money to act in Purple Rain. Even Prince showed favortism to Vanity, he only humped & dumped Apples. If you look @ all the women he has married or dated there-after…you will see that Vanity was the prototype.
