Breaking News: Major Casualties in Minneapolis Bridge Collapse . . .

I am alive! Obviously, or I wouldn’t be blogging. Fortunately, I wasn’t anywhere near the bridge when it crumbled into the Mississippi River. My phone has been ringing off the hook! For my Minneapolis/St.Paul people, please let me know you and your loved ones are okay. If you know of any casualties, please send word as soon as possible. This is just terrible! My heart goes out to anyone involved in this unfortunate incident. Events like this make me think of every one I love and even some folks I’m “on smalls” (bad terms ) with. Life can get cut short w/out any warning. . . we should nicer to each other.

A school school bus, hard working people, mothers, daughters, fathers and sons . . .
I work at the hospital. Tomorrow is going to be a very busy day. And there is a major thunder storm on the way. It’s going to be a very long night for many Minnesotans. Tomorrow evening if possible I will visit the sight and take photos.
Also, the Metrodome (which is located across the street from the county hospital) is jam packed with people who were attending a Minnesota Twins game. Everyone has been asked to remain in the dome, until to free up the roads for rescue teams, ambulances, etc.

(CNN) — At least three people were killed when an interstate bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota, collapsed Wednesday evening, plunging cars and chunks of concrete into the Mississippi River below.
There were “lots” of injuries, said the state Homeland Security and Emergency Management Department.
The accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. (7 p.m. ET). There were 50 to 100 cars on the bridge at the time, according to early estimates.
Lt. Amelia Huffman of the Minneapolis Police Department told CNN affiliate KARE it was “not clear at this point what caused the collapse” of the Interstate 35W bridge near University Avenue.
“We have personnel there in the rescue effort,” she said. “I have never seen anything remotely like this before.” (source)

I’M STILL HERE! I’m super BLESSED to have made it home yesterday crossing the bridge on 35W heading to South Minneapolis after a long “normal” day at work (at the U of MN). You don’t realize that in a blink of an eye, your normal day could of been your last. My prayers go out to everyone who was caught on the bridge and still missing.
Just wanted to pass along some info from a National Bridge Inventory report on the I35-W bridge in 2003. It reports the following items:
Deck Condition: Fair.
Superstructure Condition: Poor.
Substructure Condition: Satisfactory.
Scour: Foundations determined to be stable.
Bridge Railings: Meets currently acceptable standards.
Structural Evaluation: Meets minimum tolerable limits to be left in place as-is.
Water Adequacy Evaluation: Superior to present desirable criteria.
Bridge Sufficiency Rating: 50%
A University of Minnesota Civil Engineer in a report
to MN-DOT recently noted that this bridge is
considered to be a non-redundant structure. That is,
if any one member fails, the entire bridge can
collapse. A key factor is that there are only four
pylons holding up the arch. Any damage to any one
pylon would be catastrophic. The textbook example of a
non-redundant bridge is the Silver Bridge over the
Ohio River. It failed shortly before Christmas in 1967
resulting in 46 deaths. A single piece of hardware
failed due to a tiny manufacturing defect. But that
piece was non-redundant, and the entire bridge
collapsed into the icy river. Today, bridge engineers
design bridges so that any single piece of the bridge
can fail without causing the entire bridge to
collapse. It is tragic that the I-35W bridge was built
a few years too early to benefit from that lesson.

Thank you everyone for commenting and showing your love and support. I am especially touched by those coming forward who are regular readers of the SDD, but aint said a peep until now.
Where you been hiding? *smile*
Yeah, the media is bombarding us w/ some much info . . .but is any of it really making any sense? Less redundancy, more facts please!
